From "Into the Great Wide Open" (1991) Like other Jeff Lynne productions, this song has a mass of 6 and 12 string acoustic guitars strumming away in different capo positions. The prominent suspensions everywhere lead me to suspect Tom played in E with a capo on 1st, as with FREE FALLIN'. The intro riff sounds like a Rickenbacker 12 playing without a capo and doubled by an acoustic 12, perhaps capoed on the third. Here's a way to play that riff in E. ------------------------------------------------------------- [intro riff]
E|-----------------------|--------------------|
B|-----------------------|--------------------|
G|-----1-2-4-2-1-------1-|-----1-2-4-2-1------|
D|-2-4-----------4-2-4---|-2-4-----------4-2--|

E|-----------------------|--------------------|
[verse]
  E A2 B4 E
Trouble blew in on a cold, dark wind,

E A2 B4 E
it came without no warning.

E A2 B4 E
And that big ol' house went up for sale,

E A2 B4 E
they were on the road by morning.
[refrain]
E A2 B4 E A2 B4 E
Oh, the days went slow, into the changing season,

E A2 B4 E A2 B4 E
Oh, out in the cold for all the wrong reasons.
[Verse 2]
E A2 B4 E
Well, she grew up hard and she grew up fast,

E A2 B4 E
In the age of television.

E A2 B4 E
And she made a vow to have it all,

E A2 B4 E
It became her new religion.
[refrain]
E A2 B4 E A2 B4 E
Oh, down in her soul, it was an act of treason,

E A2 B4 E A2 B4 E
Oh, down they go for all the wrong reasons
riff [Verse 3]
E A2 B4 E
Where the sky begins, the horizon ends,

E A2 B4 E
despite the best intentions.

E A2 B4 E
And a big old man goes up for sale,

E A2 B4 E
He becomes his own invention.
[refrain]
E A2 B4 E A2 B4 E
Oh, the days go slow into the changing season,

E A2 B4 E A2 B4 E
Oh, bought and sold for all the wrong reasons,
[Outro]
E A2 B4 E A2 B4 E
Oh, down they go for all the wrong reasons.
