This Song Was First Published In A Book By A Man Named Rex Clements Called “Manavalins: A Muster Of Sea-Songs As Distinguished From Shanties, Written For The Most Part By Seamen And Sung On Board Ship During The Closing Years Of The Age Of Sail. 1890-1920. It Was Published In 1927 And Is Supposedly A Collection Of Sea Songs From 1890-1920. Paddy West Is Described In The Book As Being A Sort Of Folk Take Among Sailors Of The Time, With No Way To Tell If Paddy West Was A Real Person. As Rex Clements States,“All Sailors Are Familiar, At Least By Name,With That Heroic Figure Of The Days Of Crimping” (Clements, 94). The Longest Johns Released This Cover On Their New Album “Voyage” And I Believe They Have Done It Plenty Of Justice. If You Have Any Questions About The Song Or The Book, Please Send Me A Message. D A D
As I was walkin' down London Road,

    A D
I came to Paddy West's house

     D G D
He gave me a dish of American hash

         D Bm
and he called it Liverpool scouse

    D G D
He said, "There's a ship, she's taking hands,

     D Bm
and on her you must sign.

       D A D
The mate's a bastard, the captain's worse,

     A D
but she will do ya fine."
[Chorus]
      D G D
Take off your dungaree jackets

      D Bm
and give yourselves a rest

      D A D
And think of them cold nor'westers

    A D
we had in Paddy West's
[Verse Two]
      D A D
Now Paddy he pipes all hands on deck,

           A D
there's stations for to man

     D G D
His wife, she's stood in the doorway

         D Bm
with a bucket in her hand

      D G D
And Paddy, he cries, "Now, let 'er rip!”

          D Bm
and she throws the water our way

          D A D
Crying, "Clew up your fore t'gan'sl, boys,

        A D
she's taking on the spray!"
[Chorus]
       D G D
Take off your dungaree jackets

     D Bm
and give yourselves a rest

      D A D
And think of them cold nor'westers

[Verse Three]
     D A D
Now seeing she's off to southward,

    A D
to Frisco she was bound

     D G D
Now Paddy he takes out a length of rope

        D Bm
and he lays it on the ground

        D G D
And we all steps over and back again,

        D Bm
and he says to me, "That's fine.

 D A D
If they ask were you ever at sea,

         A D
you can say you've crossed the line"
[Chorus]
      D G D
Take off your dungaree jackets

     D Bm
and give yourselves a rest

      D A D
And think of them cold nor'westers

    A D
we had in Paddy West's
[Verse Four]
              D A D
"Now there's just one thing for you to do

 A D
before you sail away;

      D G D
Just step around the table

            D Bm
where the bullock's horns do lay.

 D G D
If they ever ask, 'Were you ever at sea?'

         D Bm
you can say, 'Ten times 'round the Horn'.

    D A D
By Jesus, you're an old sailor man

          A D
from the day that you were born."
