C F Here is where a dilemma arises C G C For the noble phytoplankton photosynthesises C F And is thus confined to where the sun shines through, C G C And so by necessity what eats them too.

C F But in the photic zone it is easier to see - C G The surface is a dangerous place to be. C F The darkness it offers substantial protection C G C From becoming some predator's tasty confection.

C F So to the surface fishies travel at night C G When there's less chance of being espied in the light C F But during the day to escape predation C G C F C They return deeper down, and that's diurnal migration.
