This is a local Irish traditional folk song written by a man named John Doyle from Ferbane in Co Offaly. its based on a location of a small village in the north of Offaly and recalls all the memories regained by the writer as he visits his old home after coming home from abroad for a visit. It has a sister song called the green fields around Ferbane which is sang in the same manner. enjoy. [Intro] G C D G [Verse 1]
G
Much have i roamed this land around,

C D G
And many joys i've met,

G
I've memories keen, of places seen,

   C D
my heart will ne'er forget.

    G
but there is one apart from all

       C D
shines like a day in June.

G
'tis when a boy, i roamed with joy,

      C D G
down round the woods of Doon
[Verse 2]
G
As when i roamed, i see again

C D G
Fair Eskers wooded side,

G
and Corrigeen, of lofty mien,

  C D
smiles downward in its pride,

G
i see Coolderragh's glistening stream,

C C
i hear its joyful croon,

G
with rippling song it sings along

       C D G
down round the woods of Doon
[Verse 3]
G
And Loughal's hills are fair to see,

    C D G
And Brackaghs hill are brown,

G
And nestled neat, at Brackaghs feet,

C D
The groves of ballinahown,

G
And crested on its stately mound,

    C D
The castle's fallen ruin,

G
A castle bold, 'till cromwell strolled,

C D G
Down round the woods of Doon.
[Verse 4]
G
In that fair place and those green woods,

      C D G
There is a pleasent glade,

G
And standing there, a tavern rare,

C D
Where many a day i strayed,

G
With old friends of mine, i quaffed the wine,

 C D
There joy was at its noon,

   G
Then life was sweet and joy complete

C D G
Down round the woods of Doon.
[Verse 5]
G
And where have all those old friends gone,

C D G
who used to sup with me,

G
Ah! some are dead, and some have fled,

C D
Far far beyond the sea,

G
And some there are, ill meet again,

C D
I'll hold a glass there soon,

G
And Toast galore the days of yore,

C D G
Down round the woods of Doon.
[Verse 6]
G
May kindly fortune, on you smile,

C D G
And may you ever thrive,

G
And your green woods be rich in buds,

C D
And long live your memories live,

G
And may your days and years to come,

C D
Shine like a silvery moon,

G
Old comrades true, and friends i knew,

C D G
Down round the woods of Doon.
