For years people have transcribed this song incorrectly and struggled playing the song with the easy the Buckingham seems to have. Why? cause they haven't studied Buckingham's playing style, if they had of they would know he using a basic form of travis picking THUMB plays the base and fingers play the melody. What we find here with all the tab on the web and in books is they are putting extra notes in that were never there and making the song harder then it is. The best way to approach this song is to learn the chord shapes first and switching between them smoothly. It opens up with a closed D chord baring strings 1 to 4 at the 2ndfret with finger number 1 and then finger 2 on the B string 3rd fret and finger 3 on the d string 4th fret. Then you just pull off fingers 2 and 3,leaving finger 1 in place for the second chord A. Now just practice switching these 2 chords first before adding in Lyndsey's basic travis picking. Remember the song is 4/4 and the 3 bass notes all playon the quarter note, thus for bass notes per bar. Now practice just the bass notes with your picking hand thumb only, 6,4,5,4. Remember with travis picking, the root bass rule. The Thumb always plays the route of thechord first. The next chord is a bit of a stretch but as the 4th bass string rings on the D chord it gives you time to switch. So you just slide your 4th finger up to the 5th fret and using your little finger on the 5th fret of the b string leaving the bar in place with the 1st finger. Just allow you hand to sit back rather then up over the strings like a classical player would. Break the picking down again. Learn the treble strings part first counting the beat with your foot. Then slowly introduce the thumb. You are playing quarter notes just on the 4th and 5th string now for this part. Below is the added section. On the studio recording Lindsey can be heard playing the high E string at the 5th fret at the start of the song, however on all his live recordings he plays it as above. Anyway on the studio version its starts as below. Ive also added a repeat section without the 5th fret played, however with the high E playing at the 2nd fret. Its good to be able to play all variation and will help you to add that little extra to the song. On the Romours album he has tuned his guitar a full step down and playing a capo at the 6th fret i thing from memory.
