(this tab works for the album version as well; simply move the capo to the fifth fret.)
The song is played almost entirely with an Em9omit5 chord shape; a sort of C chord that is moved up two frets:
e|-0-|
B|-3-|
G|-0-|
D|-4-|
A|-5-|
E|-0-|
- a beautiful chord, i'd say.
this pattern is used in the intro and sporadically throughout the song:
e|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
B|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
G|-----0-----0---------0-----0-----------------------------------------------|
D|---4---4-----4-----4---4-----4---------------------------------------------|
A|-5-------5-----5-5-------5-----5-------------------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
x2 for the intro, x2 after verse 1, x2 after "I know, I know..."after the intro, the Em9omit5 chord is played with a strumming pattern of "down, down up" with a slightly
muted downstroke for both the last two beats of each measure (this would likely make more sense if
listening to the song).
Occasionally, finger 4 (pinky) is placed on the fifth fret of the first string, like so: e|-5-| B|-3-| G|-0-| D|-4-| A|-5-| E|-0-| for example: after the line "...calls the shots"
The entire song is the Em9omit5 chord strummed with varying accents and intensity. Some strums barely
strike more than a single string, usually the 5th or 6th. I would reccomdend strumming with the side of your
thumb for a softer tone. For a brighter sound for accenting, you could strum with the cuticle of your
index/middle finger, flat against the strings & parallel to your thumb (as if holding an imaginary guitar
pick).
