Note: Watch how Doc would pick using only index and thumb. This allows the thumb to fly between E-G strings without "cramping" the hand, so to speak. It is advisable to play this way to achieve the proper feeling and fluidity of the song. Keep in mind, the tab is of the album version. Further expounding on the above advice, both Doc and Mississppi John Hurt neglected their ring finger entirely It is the naturally weaker and clumsy finger,and as previously mentioned, using it interferes with the thumbs mobility when using alternate picking patterns. If I'm not mistaken, the great Francisco Tárrega said playing melody and using the ring finger is expressly forbidden, a principle employed by classical guitarists to this day.
