Devendra Banhart – A Gentle Soul (Guitar Intro Tab)

Chords

This is one of my favourite songs from "oh me oh My...", and a true weird folk classic, I think. True to Devendra's loose-form improvisational spirit, this is not an attempt to perfectly reproduce every single note played. Rather, it's a rough outline or template from which you can begin to access Devendra's peculiar and beguiling world... Again, playfulness and informality are essential, here, to really get a feel for the song. ** Tabbed by Rohan [Intro] Just ad-lib on the Fm chord, really.
e|-------------------8---------------------|
B|-----------9---------------9-------------|
G|---10--------10------10------10----------|
D|------10--------10------10------10-------|
A|---8-----8---------8---------------------|
E|-----------------------------------------|
[Verse] It's just four barre chords, in this order: Fm, A#, Cm, A#. Play them as follows:
e|---8----|
B|---9----|
G|---10---|  {Fm}
D|---10---|
A|---8----|
E|--(8)---|

e|---6----|
B|---6----|
G|---7----|  {A#}
D|---8----|
A|---8----|
E|---6----|

e|---8----|
B|---8----|
G|---8----|  {Cm}
D|---10---|
A|---10---|
E|---8----|
One way to play is to strum each chord once, then fingerpick the B and G strings, sucessively, while half-strumming the bass notes. [Bridge] This is the part that begins with "Camilla's a calming name..."
e|---8-------------8-------------6----------------------|
B|---8-----------8---9-8---------6----------------------| o
G|---8--(Strum)----------10-8----7--(Strum)--7-8-7------|
D|---10--------------------------8--------------(8)-----|
A|---10--------------------------8--------------(8)-----| o
E|---8-----------8---------------6------------- (6)-----|
The first transition from this section to the verse simply involves the chords Cm and A#, without the riff. However, the final transition does include the riff, with one added note, as follows:
e|---8-------------8---------------6----------------------|
B|---8-----------8---9-8-----------6----------------------|
G|---8--(Strum)----------10-8-10---7--(Strum)--7-8-7------|
D|---10----------------------------8--------------(8)-----|
A|---10----------------------------8--------------(8)-----|
E|---8-----------8-----------------6------------- (6)-----|
** Lyrics: He told me himself He's a gentle soul I saw for myself He's a gentle soul Camilla's a calming name Like windowing Camilla's a calming name Like windowing There's nobody else with your babe's little eyes This is number fourteen out of how many tries Your voice has a calming strain All whispering My voice wants to do the same oh brothering All alone in your zoo of numbers and clues Of colors and hues He told me himself He's a gentle soul ************************************ | (n) Ghost note ************************************
