Chan plays this pretty straight live without a capo but on the record there are a lot of spontaneous
changes to the chord pattern and it sounds like it's played with a capo or possibly even a guitar that's
tuned slightly different.
The left hand frets the top and bottom string like a g chord and moves around the fretboard except for a
a stray high F# (second fret on high e) in the middle of the main pattern.
I play the low e with my thumb and my index and middle fingers pluck the top two strings alternatively.
The pattern doesn't matter too much IMO just take it slow and add some reverb and it will sound like the song.
