Entire tab is standard notation, not relative to the capo.
Comments: There are several tabs that sound correct for the album version. However,
watching live performances, Ben Bridwell's guitar part is not being played as it has been tabbed;
He has the firth string tuned to an A rather than B.
He essentially keeps his hands in almost an identical position throughout the
entire song, making this a remarkably easy song to play.
He fingers the intro using his ring finger on the low D, his middle finger on the G
and his pinky on the (re-tuned) high A. He changes the fingering for last chord shape
in the intro by removing his middle finger from the G and replacing it with his index finger one fret down.
For the strumming part he uses a pick. For all strumming during the verse, he simply strums
the chord shapes being picked during the introduction.
For the chorus he keeps his fingers in the same chord shape, but he adds his index finger on
the low A string as indicated below, one half step below the basic chord shape. In one video it
appears he adds the index finger to the low E, and mutes the fifth string with the index, which sounds
better to me, but isn't how he usually plays it.
Gear:
He plays this with a 1976 Gibson Standard guitar. I believe the effect chain being
used in this song is:
Effect: Boss DigitalDelay DC-5
Settings: Level 10 o'clock, F.Back 10 o'clock, D.time 12 o'clock, effect: room
Effect: T-rex Boom-mate reverb
Setting: High cut: 9 o'clock, mix, 10 o'clock, input 9 o'clock, mode 1
Effect: MXR Micro Amp
Setting: Single knob at 12:30 o'clock
Effect: Pusher by sfe
Setting: Amp: 2, Booster 9 a.m.
AMP: Marshall 1963 Blues Breaker amp.
Effect usage: All effects are on throughout song except digital delay, which is only used
in sections that are strummed.
Playing notes:
He slides between positions and the slide can sometimes be heard, expecially
between the end of the pattern and the restart.
He plays the finger picking sections by playing the first two notes picking down with his thumb,
and the second two notes picking up with his index finger.
Strumming during the verse is almost mechanical, with small strokes only hitting the fretted notes.
During the barre chord section he relaxes his strumming to play a more traditional sounding rhythm guitar,
using the strumming pattern indicated below.
I did not tab the second guitar because I could not find a video that clearly showed exactly how it he was
playing. However, I am fairly confident he is playing the identical tab as Bridwell, except not playing the
picking section. (He does pick the Cm transition sections).
